Piton de la Fournaise by Van: How to Plan It
Sleep at the crater’s edge, set off hiking at sunrise, cross the Plaine des Sables — the ultimate volcanic experience in Réunion, from your van.
Visiting Piton de la Fournaise by van is the ultimate experience in Réunion. Sleep at the crater’s edge, set off hiking at sunrise straight from your van, cross the Plaine des Sables at dawn — all of this is possible, accessible and free. Here’s everything you need to know to plan it perfectly.
Why Piton de la Fournaise is a Must
Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes in the world — erupting on average 3 to 4 times a year. At 2,632 metres high with a crater 1 kilometre across, it’s Réunion’s natural jewel and one of the most spectacular hikes in France.
For the van traveller, the advantage is unique: the Pas de Bellecombe car park (2,311m), the starting point of the main hike, allows overnight stays. You can sleep at the crater’s edge, set off hiking before the first tourist coaches, and experience sunrise over the lava from your van. No hotel on the island can offer that.
Piton de la Fournaise erupts in about 65% of years. The chance of witnessing an eruption during your stay is real — and if it happens, it’s an even more extraordinary spectacle than the usual hike.
Before You Go: The Essential Checks
Piton de la Fournaise is an active volcano. Before each visit, three checks are mandatory:
Check ovpf-ipgp.fr the day before and the morning of departure. During an eruption, Pas de Bellecombe is closed by prefectural order. Free app: Fournaise Info.
The weather at the summit is completely independent of the coast. Check the forecast for the “Piton de la Fournaise massif”. Practical rule: leave before 7am to reach the summit before the clouds.
The forest road can be closed during heavy rain or rockfalls. Check the prefecture’s website or the “Route Réunion” app.

Access to Pas de Bellecombe is fully van-friendly — it’s a paved road all the way to the car park. No particular technical difficulty.

The ideal scenario for hiking. Pas de Bellecombe is open, the trails are marked. Overnight stay and sunrise on the programme.
