What to Pack for a Van Road Trip in Réunion?
The complete checklist so you forget nothing: clothing, outdoor gear, first-aid kit and van-lifer essentials.
A van road trip in Réunion takes preparation! The island offers every climate within a few kilometres: 30°C on Saint-Gilles beach, 5°C at night at the Plaine des Cafres. Choosing well what you bring makes all the difference between a comfortable trip and an uncomfortable adventure.
Here’s our complete list, tested and approved by dozens of clients who have criss-crossed the island by van.
Clothing: Think in Layers
The golden rule in Réunion: dress in layers. The morning at the volcano can be freezing, the afternoon on the beach will be tropical. Plan light outfits (t-shirts, shorts, swimwear) and a warm layer (fleece or softshell) for nights at altitude.
Essentials: 1 light raincoat (tropical showers are sudden), 2 to 3 light versatile trousers, waterproof hiking shoes and sandals for the beach.
1 pair of waterproof hiking shoes (mandatory for the volcano and the cirques) + 1 pair of sandals or flip-flops for the coast.
Outdoor Gear
Réunion is an outdoor destination par excellence. To make the most of the hikes and viewpoints, a few pieces of gear are essential. A 20 to 30L hiking backpack is ideal for day trips from the van.
Also think of sunglasses (the sun is very intense at altitude), SPF50+ sunscreen and a hat. A headlamp is useful for pre-dawn departures to the volcano.
Walking poles, a 1L reusable water bottle, survival blanket, whistle, IGN map of the area or offline Maps.me download.
Hygiene & Health
The first-aid kit is essential — especially if you hike in remote areas. Plan plasters, an antihistamine cream (wasps and mosquitoes are present), paracetamol and your usual medication.
Mosquito protection is a must: in Réunion, the risk of dengue is real. Skin repellent, an electric diffuser for the nights and covering clothes in the evening are your best allies.
Prefer repellents based on DEET or icaridin. Apply them from sunset, particularly in humid areas and the highlands.
Cooking & Food
Your van is equipped with a stove and basic utensils, but a few small extras will make your meals more enjoyable. A moka coffee pot for mornings at altitude, a small chopping board, a good knife and local spices bought at the markets.
Plan some reserve supplies (cereal bars, dried fruit, pasta) for days when you’ll be far from any shop — especially in the highlands or on long hikes.
Creole spices (massalé, turmeric), Réunion vanilla, arranged rum — local flavours that will enrich your meals and your memories.
Tech & Navigation
Your van is equipped with a GPS, but remember to download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline): some highland areas have little network. An external battery is precious for recharging your devices on long hikes.
A USB cigarette-lighter adapter lets you charge your devices while driving. Don’t forget a spare charging cable and an extra memory card for your camera.
Orange and SFR have the best coverage in Réunion. Download your maps and guides BEFORE heading into the highlands or the cirques.
Good preparation is 50% of the pleasure of the trip. Travelling light but well-equipped is the art of the van-lifer.
