What to See in Réunion
by Camper Van?

Active volcanoes, lush cirques, black-sand beaches, scenic roads… the must-sees of the intense island, from your van.

📅 2025⏱️ 12 min read🚐 Van road trip

Réunion is a land that defies superlatives. In barely 2,512 km², you’ll find an active volcano, three cirques listed as UNESCO World Heritage, white- and black-sand beaches, tropical forests and lunar landscapes. A concentrate of raw nature, accessible by camper van.

Travelling by van on the intense island is total freedom: waking at sunrise facing Piton de la Fournaise, sipping your coffee while gazing at Mafate’s cliffs, driving along the wild South coast. This guide presents the 9 must-sees not to miss on your Réunion road trip.

1

Piton de la Fournaise

🌋 Active volcano Piton de la Fournaise, Réunion's active volcano

Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. From the Pas de Bellecombe-Jacob, the panorama over the Plaine des Sables caldera will take your breath away. Each year it erupts several times, offering a unique natural spectacle.

By van, the advantage is considerable: sleep nearby and set off at dawn to reach the summit before the crowds. The road crosses the Plaine des Cafres then the Plaine des Sables — a landscape from another planet, red and mineral.

📍 Practical info

Access: forest road from Bourg-Murat (RN3). Open outside eruption periods. Hike: 3 to 5h for the Dolomieu crater loop. Tip: arrive at the car park before 6am.

2

The Cirque de Cilaos

⛰️ UNESCO cirque

Nestled at 1,200 metres, the Cirque de Cilaos is probably the most accessible and photogenic of Réunion’s three cirques. Dizzying ramparts, silvery waterfalls, terraced crops and the Creole village with its thermal baths and vineyards — an essential stop.

The road leading there is one of the most winding in France — 400 bends from Saint-Louis — but every bend reveals a panorama more beautiful than the last. From Cilaos, attempt the trail to the Piton des Neiges (3,070 m), the highest point in the Indian Ocean.

💡 The van tip

Park your van in the village the night before to enjoy Cilaos in the morning mist. Avoid the road during cyclone season: it’s often cut off by landslides.

3

The Cirque de Mafate

🥾 Accessible on foot only

Mafate is the only cirque in Réunion that can’t be reached by car. No road, no mobile network. Only trails, îlets clinging to the cliffs and a preserved Creole community. To enter Mafate, you put on your shoes and set off on foot.

From your van parked at Maïdo or Roche-Plate, the main entrances (Col des Bœufs, Rivière des Galets) are accessible on foot. Once inside, stay in the îlet lodges (La Nouvelle, Marla, Aurère…). A world apart, out of time.

📍 Main entrances

Col des Bœufs: from La Plaine des Tamarins. Rivière des Galets: from the west coast. Maïdo: viewpoint with a plunging view over the cirque, accessible by van.

4

The Cirque de Salazie

💧 Waterfalls & forests

Salazie is the most lush and humid cirque on the island. Tree ferns, wild banana plants and waterfalls tumbling 300 metres down the cliffs — everything is luxuriant. The Voile de la Mariée waterfall, visible from the road, is one of the most impressive on the island.

The village of Hell-Bourg, listed among the most beautiful villages in France, deserves a long stop: its Creole houses with flower-filled verandas are a feast for the eyes.

📍 Don’t miss

Voile de la Mariée waterfall — visible from the RD48. Hell-Bourg — listed village, ideal for lunch. Mare à Poule d’Eau — a peaceful body of water in the heart of the cirque.

5

Maïdo & the Plaine des Tamarins

🌅 Panoramic view Panorama from Maïdo over the Cirque de Mafate

Maïdo (2,200 m) offers one of the most striking panoramas: a 2,000-metre plunge over the Cirque de Mafate. Sunset and sunrise from this viewpoint are unforgettable moments. Sleeping in your van at the Plaine des Tamarins (1,800 m) lets you be there at first light.

The Plaine des Tamarins is an endemic forest unique in the world. The air is cool, sometimes misty, and the nights are chilly — bring something to keep warm in your van!

⏰ Best time

Arrive at Maïdo before 7am to see the clouds below you and the Cirque de Mafate bathed in golden light. After 9-10am, the mist often rises.

Sleeping in your van at 1,800 metres at the Plaine des Tamarins, getting up at 5:30am to catch the sunrise at Maïdo — these are the kind of mornings that justify every kilometre travelled.

6

Saint-Gilles-les-Bains & the West Coast

🏖️ Beaches & lagoon

The west coast is home to the island’s only white-sand beaches and protected lagoon. Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is the main seaside resort with its restaurants, surf shops and Creole bars. L’Ermitage beach, with its turquoise waters, is ideal for snorkelling.

Further south, Saint-Leu is the surf capital of Réunion. By van, drive the whole coast in a day, stopping at every beach that appeals to you.

🦈 Important — Shark safety

Swimming outside the marked lagoon is forbidden or discouraged on many beaches. Swim only in supervised areas protected by nets (L’Ermitage beach, Boucan Canot).

7

The Wild South

🌊 Volcanic coast

The Wild South is Réunion’s hidden face — raw, volcanic, striking. Between Saint-Philippe and Saint-Pierre, the coastal road runs alongside lava flows that reached the sea during the latest eruptions, creating black, mineral landscapes of strange beauty.

The black-sand beaches of Grande Anse and Manapany, the natural rock pools, the Saint-Philippe blowhole — so many treasures accessible from your van.

📍 Key stops on the Wild South

Grande Anse: black-sand beach, picnic. Manapany-les-Bains: natural rock pool. Saint-Philippe: the blowhole & recent lava flows. Le Baril: sunset from the panoramic tables.

8

The Plaine des Cafres & the Highlands

🌿 The island’s highlands

The Plaine des Cafres, at 1,500 metres, is the crossroads of Réunion’s highlands. Cool, misty, green — an unexpected Réunion. Bourg-Murat is the ideal base to head to the volcano, visit the Cité du Volcan and stock up.

Further east, the Bélouve forest and the cliffs of the Rivière des Marsouins offer unique forest hikes. The Nez de Bœuf viewpoint, above Cilaos, is accessible from the Plaine des Cafres.

🌡️ Watch out for the cold

In the highlands, temperatures can drop to 5°C at night, even in the austral summer. Prepare your van: a warm blanket and insulation are essential.

Practical tips for your van road trip

Travelling by camper van in Réunion takes a few adjustments. Here are our tips to make the most of the island without unpleasant surprises.

🗓️

Best time

April to November (austral winter) to avoid cyclones. Set off early to get the cirques cloud-free.

Refuelling

Fill up before heading into the highlands. Stations are rare above 1,000 m. Bring water.

🅿️

Parking

Many forest car parks and developed areas. Avoid camping by the roadside in inhabited zones.

🛣️

Narrow roads

The roads to the cirques are very winding. Check weather conditions — frequent landslide risk.

📶

Mobile network

Very good network at low altitude, patchy in the cirques, non-existent in Mafate. Download your maps offline.

🌡️

Varied temperatures

From the seaside (30°C) to the highlands (5°C at night). Réunion offers every climate — dress in layers.
